TWO DECADES OF SERVICE FOR THE CHALLENGED WOMEN & COMMUNITIES IN & AROUND KUMBAKONAM
The personal struggle undergone by Mrs.B.V.Rajatthy, a house wife, after her husband's tragic death due to cardiac arrest made her to realize the miserable situation of the millions of her hopeless counter parts in the country and motivated her to work for the suppressed women in Tanjore and Thiruvarur Districts. The sudden shift from easy going house wife to the responsible family head who had to shape the future of four young children, three of them being girl children, forced her to face severe problems within her immediate family circle and in the Society. Being a post graduate, she had the will power and guts to swim against the current of exploitation by the male members of he husband's relatives and of the society. Finally, she could successfully prove herself as a strong women and a committed leader.
Mrs.Rajatthi wanted her successful transformation from an innocent house wife to a strong famuly leader as a motivational message to the thousands of ignorant women and formed an informal group in the year 1984 along with few of her committed female friends and started working for the development of women, destitute and neglected children.
An English Medium School for the poor children, family counseling and skill training to women in tailoring and pith works, arranging bank loans for the promotion of self – employment ventures are the preliminary activities carried out during the first 5 years. After 5 years of her dedicated service through informal organization, the need arose to develop a forum for undertaking many more need based activities to benefit large number of women from the lower strata of the society. As a result in the year 1989 ‘DURGA WOMEN'S ORGANISATION” (DWO) a registered society came into existence. The forum DWO had given her legal status to carry out wide range of welfare programmes to lead women belonging to economically weaker sections to march towards self – governance and progress.
